I'm tired of honking the horn on my RT and no one listening! What's a guy gotta do to get a little R.E.S.P.E.C.T?! Determined to remedy the situation, I did a little research and purchased a Stebel Horn. Joe, the distributor, is intimately familiar with the product and is very helpful. On a side note, Joe tells me that the horn will consume 17A on startup and 15A after that. Also, the site doesn't advertise it, but the horn comes with a relay (no socket with wire leads, just the relay). Follow-up note: Not even two rides after installing the horn, the relay failed. I recommend buying a good relay from CarQuest or some other parts store.
Now that I have the horn, how am I going to wire it up? I checked out the harness running into the OEM horn and discovered that the connector leading to the horn is actually built into the horn housing. I like things tidy and buttoned-up so cutting the OEM harness is the last resort.
I am living in Arlington, VA at the present moment, and I decided that I would call Battley Cycles. I spoke with a parts guy there, Greg, and told him that I was looking for the male connector that plugs into the OEM harness for the horn. After literally 10 seconds of looking at the parts fiche, he says, "Well I can't find the connector. You're going to have to make it [cut the OEM harness and solder some wires together]." I couldn't believe it. This guy just gave up and quit. Seriously?! Whatever! Hire a new parts guy Battley.
James at Bob's BMW is good. The guy does some checking on his own and says, "Look, I don't know the part number, but our service guys install Stebel horns all the time. Let me get one of them on the phone, and we'll see what we can come up with." Now this is customer service!
I speak with one of the Service Techs, Steve. He says, "Oh yea! [I] install Stebel's all the time. I don' t know the number off the top of my head, but if you'll hold on, I'll get it." He comes back with the male connector part number for the horn - 83300402344. BAM!
I get back on the phone with James, and he says, "I've got one connector, and I'm holding it in my hand. It's $20.95. When do you want to come pick it up?"
Now, we're on hold until I get the connector...
Well, I had to make a trip up to Baltimore for work, and I completely forgot about the connector. Luckily, Morton's BMW in Fredericksburg, VA had one.
I rode over there one evening, and the parts guy, Seth, did an amazing job on the up-sell. Twisted Throttle makes a wiring harness complete with relay socket, in-line fuse, and spade connectors already crimped. It was worth the $30.
Connector and wiring harness in hand, I began the job. Here's a short video. All I can say is, "Now that's a horn!!"
