Coming out of Valdez, I was able to pass through Keystone Canyon and Thompson Pass again, some really beautiful country. Next up was the Glennallen Highway to Anchorage.
The Glennallen Highway is a site better road than what I have driven in Alaska so far with nice pavement. Until I ran into rain for the sixth straight day, it was bliss. There are some vistas of glaciated areas to the south in the Matanuska-Susitna Valley. The Matanuska Glacier, it's moraine, and King Mountain offer some incredible scenery.
Before I knew it, I was in Anchorage. Motorcycle riders beware! The Seward Highway through Anchorage is rutted beyond belief. The first time I attempted to change position within the lane, I was diverted back to my original course, like I was riding a rail. Water puddles deep too! I hydroplaned the front end a couple of times.
I stopped at a place called West Berlin and had some good schnitzel and kraut for lunch. I was craving some savory pork, and they did not disappoint. I imagine that since there is joint Army-Air Force base here that there are sevreal folks who have spent time in Germany.
Speaking of Germany, I needed to find the BMW motorrad, which turns out to be called The Motorcycle Shop. A thought occured to me while riding that I could fix the stripped hole problem in the windshield support if I could get a longer screw that would reach the good threads. I did just that. The parts person at the dealership found a longer screw for me. One of the service guys let me borrow a tap to chase the threads in the hole, and in short order, the windshield is again firmly affixed to the motorcycle.
It just so happened that across the street from the motorrad was a CarQuest Auto Parts store. I popped in and bought some new headlights that I installed in the parking lot of the motorrad. Check and check!
I have to come back through Anchorage, so more on this town later. Now, I'm off to Seward.
