I've heard about this road several times over the years, and I was finally able to ride it. The road runs between Durango and Ouray and is accented by steep cliffs, switchbacks, canyon vistas, and no guard rails in some places. It was very picturesque, especially at the waterfall overlook.
We stopped in Silverton and ate at the Handlebar Saloon where I tried mountain oysters for the first time. Meh...
The Black Canyon of the Gunnison provided the most splendid canyon views of the entire trip. It is a must see because pictures don't convey the beautiful, grandiose expanse of the canyon.
At dusk, the clouds gave the impression that they would open up and rain on us at any moment, so we decided to hole up in Gunnison for the night.
