I was able to get my new Samsung tablet to charge using a homemade USB adapter; however, I have a new problem.
When I plug my phone into the USB port to charge, and I also have the input for my communication system plugged into the 3.5 mm jack on the phone, I can hear quite a bit of engine noise. If I stop the engine and conduct a test, there is no noise or interference. Sounds like I have a ground loop... Bummer.
Luckily, there are companies that make a device called a ground loop isolator, or noise filter, for 12V electrical systems. These devices are often used by vehicle audiophiles since this is a common problem in those types of applications.
I had to wait a few days for the device to be shipped. When I opened the package, it was a little bigger then I expected it to be. On top of that, it's chrome plated! Oh well. As long as it works.
I was able to tuck it in the under tail of the bike near the wiring harness for the tail light. With a little soldering and shrink wrap, I got the device wired up and tested. Now, I can listen to my phone and make a call with no engine noise coming through the speakers or static being heard on the other end by whoever I called.
Next challenge...
